More Christmas Theater
Reviewed by Rose Desena
The Katselas Theater Company solo mojo program introduces us to David Trudell, performer and writer of this short but very comical one man show. I loved the title, but it has very little to do with Christmas. I figure it was for marketing purposes this time of year. Trudell’s little secrets become an open book as he pours his heart out about the trials and tribulations of his life as a misfit child and later as a gay man.
He opens the show with a wrapped package, when opened it reveals a black 8 ball that Trudell uses as a crystal ball, referring to it as a platform to move through the different stories. We listen to stories of childhood disappointment and his experiences coming out to his parents.
He speaks about his escapades of casual sex in seedy Hollywood motels and trying to find love in all the wrong places. It’s ok entertainment, but I was glad it was short and a little sweet. I think it needed more work, I felt like it was rushed out to soon. After all, it is in development, and maybe with a little more work, it will be much better. If it means anything, I did laugh and when I left I wasn’t upset that I saw it.
It’s not a bad production; it just has been said before, and there have been a lot of one man shows this year, maybe too many.
