New Foreign Documentary
“A Girl & the City”
Sheds Light on International Women’s Social Issues
On March 10th guest gathered in Hollywood to view a foreign documentary entitled “A Girl & the City” by entrepreneur and philanthropist Alina Reyzelman. The film documents the challenges modern women in Moscow, Russia, face on a daily bases. She takes you into the lives of three women from different backgrounds and social classes of society.
The documentary tugs at your heart with the introduction of Marsha, a single mother who cleans apartments, schools, and local clinics to survive. When Marsha was seventeen years young she went to school to pursue her dreams to become a doctor. However, after the passing of her parents passed and meeting the man of her dreams (or so she thought), she put her education on hold. Her dreams unfortunately collapsed when her lover left her alone with a baby to take care of by herself. With very little social benefits it is a difficult challenge to make ends meet for the young single mom and her young daughter Sasha that suffers from asthma. Moscow is one of the most polluted cities in the world with six million cars driving people to their work daily. Living in the city is a detriment to Sasha’s health, which is why Doctors recommended the family move closer to the sea to escape the polluted city (An impossible request for the financially strained Marsha). The documentary showed Marsha creating a plan of action to accomplish a greater quality of life for her daughter with the hopes of falling in love again someday.
Next is Svetlana, a beautiful professional model who aspires to become a television host or actress. At first glance, Svetlana’s life is what most women would covet. She resides in a luxurious apartment in Moscow, wears designer brands and enjoys the finer things in life. Svetlana candidly lifts the veil on her luxurious lifestyle to expose a woman that battles with loneliness and vulnerability. Behind the façade is a beautiful woman that desires to have a family and stability. Despite the misconceptions about the effortlessness required to model, she reveals the rigor of expensive beauty treatments and unimaginable hours on set. The documentary sheds further insight into Svetlana’s life and her belief that men should provide for women and give them everything they need.
Lastly there is Elena, a hard working senior marketing manager at a large international company. Elena is ambitious and career driven with hopes of becoming the vice president of marketing, while also pursuing her MBA. With an unemployed husband, Elena works long hours, does not take holiday breaks, and often works weekend shifts. Elena strongly believes that gender doesn’t matter in order to become successful; men and women should work equally as hard. However, Elena is not naïve to the fact that gender equality doesn’t always exist. She believes that women have to try harder; they have to be more resilient, and even more flexible than men. Like most career driven women, Elena faces the dilemma of finding the right time to start a family. We watch as Elena makes some very tough decisions about what to do with her life moving forward.
The documentary shed light on the modern woman in Moscow and the various obstacles they face in life. Whether attempting to balance a job, personal time or taking care of her family…she accomplishes it all. Though there are still many issues in Moscow’s society when it comes to gender discrimination, financial support of socially unprotected members of society, and fields of the workforce, Russian women have come a long way compared to two decades ago. Russian women are professional, intelligent, they know what they want, and are willing to take risks for happiness. ‘’A Girl & the City’’ is an educational documentary that shows the different aspects of modern life in Russia and allows us to gain insight into issues plaguing their society. The issues discussed in the documentary are situations women can relate to worldwide.
