To me, an American Thanksgiving is all about the four “F’s” – food, family, fun and football! Many American households rely on the four “F’s” to make their Thanksgiving complete. I know in my house, the four “F’s” are very important to a successful and fulfilling turkey day!
How would an American Thanksgiving be without out any family, after all? I think this is the most important factor to the day. After all, Thanksgiving is about giving thanks for all the wonderful things in life. When I think of what to give thanks for I immediately think of family, a job, money in the bank, a roof of my head, and warm food in my belly. I can not imagine a Thanksgiving alone, and I often think of the elderly who have no one to celebrate with on this joyous holiday. Luckily, a big part of an American Thanksgiving is volunteering time and donating. Many people choose to work soup kitchens, homeless shelters, meals on wheels or donate food to various organizations.
American Thanksgiving is a wonderful and gluttonous day. For most people, it includes a lot of fine, home-cooked food. In my household this is the most joyous part of the day. All day long various cooks will be in the kitchen tenderly slaving away over all kinds of wonderful edible delights. Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, hot butter rolls, and pumpkin cheesecake just to name a few! Yes, our tradition is to make pumpkin cheesecake, not pie. It’s the little differences that make an American Thanksgiving so wonderful.
Another big tradition for many is football. I have to say I did not grow up in a household where the men watch football on Thanksgiving day. My father was always into Nascar and wrestling but never football; however, as my sisters and I have grown into adults, with our own husbands and children, football is now commonplace. Many men, and women, enjoy watching the ball being thrown around on the TV while feasting on fowl delights. There is also something so comforting about football on the television while the family gathers around the dining room table.
And of course, let’s not forget the fun! In my household we like to play various games such as; Pictionary, Scrabble, or Monopoly. Some of the family likes to take a football outside and kick it around the yard. There is also a lot of playing with the dogs and kids. Whatever, your family traditions are remember the four “F’s” and Thanksgiving will be a fabulous day filled with food, family, fun and maybe even some football.
