The Coeurage Theatre Company takes on love in Shakespeare’s classic romantic comedy “Love’s Labour’s Lost”.  We are in Navarre, and things have been shaken up a bit by the King.

He and his motley crew sporting cell phones and I pads decide to study hard for a few years and swear off temptation by agreeing to celibacy. To ensure they stay true to their word the King forbids women to come within a mile of the court.

Good Luck! Not everyone gets it, and the naughty Costard ( Chris O’Brien) is caught having a little fling on forbidden ground.  He is punished by the King and sentenced to bran and water for a week, Yikes!  O’Brien is adorable in his fun; colorful costume of surfer shorts and funny socks, and this combined with his presence on the stage is just lovable.

To serve his sentence O’Brien is handed off to the Spaniard Don Armado ( Jonas Barranca) and the two  are very compatible together on stage.

In the meantime the lovely  Princess of France is looking for a little action and her right-hand man, Boyet, ( Anthony Mark Barrow), not being privy to their current vows, suggests she meet the King of Navarre  and his merry men, they are single and I guess the pickings in France were slim.

So the Princess sets out for Navarre, but once she arrives the Princess and Boyet are forced to stay in a tent away from the court. The Princess of France in a tent! Obviously, she is not happy with this arrangement. That’s when everything goes amuck in this zany adaptation of a Shakespeare masterpiece complete with a little deception and trickery.

The stage set is a surprise, and I was really impressed with the directing; it’s a large cast to move around on a small stage, the acting is stellar and very high energy.  Even if you’re not a Shakespeare fan you will find this entertaining and enjoyable.

I love the Coeurage Theatre Company and its commitment to affordable theatre.  It’s always pay what you want. So whether you’re a little short on cash this week or just need a bit of classical theatre gone crazy, this might be just the ticket.
