Marlena has been one tough cookie. She survived the horrors of
the Holocaust and a bad marriage to eventually make a life for herself and
her daughters in America. She endured much and sacrificed a lot for the
sake of her Francine, Anne and Stella. Marlena’s aging now, and it’s
becoming questionable as to how independent she can remain for how long.
There’s the prospect of a late-life courtship by a charming mature
gentleman, but it’s really her daughters who will have to make some
decisions soon regarding her future. She’s given them everything. What will
they do now? Will they do what’s right, or what’s convenient?

Sonia Levitin is the playwright. The author of over 40 novels
translated into five languages, her previous work for the theatre includes
a musical for which she wrote the book and lyrics, “Return,” based on her
novel about the exodus of Ethiopian Jews to Israel during the 1980s.
“Return” was produced at Edgemar Center for the Arts. The new work,
“Surviving Mama,” is inspired by true events.

Doug Kaback directs. He has previously directed shows for
Edgemar Center, the Old Globe, Fountain Theatre, Cornerstone Theatre, Los
Angeles Theatre Center, East West Players, Odyssey Theatre and other
venues. He has written over forty plays, and is a Professor at Cal State
Northridge.

His cast for “Surviving Mama” includes, in alphabetical order:
Emily Dean, Jerry Lacy, Peter Lucas, Gina Manziello, Arva Rose, Sharon
Rosner and Matt Silver.

            Production Manager: Lloyd F. Reese.
*Lainie Kazan, previously announced to perform as Mama, has
withdrawn from the cast to accept a role in a feature film. The role of
Mama will now be performed by Arva Rose.*
“Surviving Mama” is a woman’s story with an epic sweep: escape
from the Nazis, love in a time of danger, the struggle to raise a family in
the new world, and the challenges of maturity. It is, on one level, an
adventure story. But for many audience members, the dilemma of the aging
Marlena will resonate soundly: How will we best do right by the woman who
gave us life?
