“The Dia Diaries” Interview with Matthew VanLeeuwen

On April 22 of 2015, Showbucks Inc. held an event to launch their latest SHOWROOM mobile app at the Andaz Hotel in West Hollywood. The Dia Diaries had the opportunity to be introduced to their latest, completely free, app and caught up with SHOWROOM Vice President and celebrity makeup artist Matthew VanLeeuwen to discuss his latest projects and get some of his most practical tips.

As Matthew VanLeeuwen excitedly started off, he immediately told us about how this new mobile beauty app by Showbucks Inc. will take the world of beauty to the next level. How? With the app, anyone with an interest in beauty can create sixty-second videos of tutorials, product reviews, and recommendations. After you finish recording, you are able to publish the video on the app for anyone to watch. If shoppers become interested in purchasing a product after a product recommendation video, the app will then take them to the link where the product can be purchased.

Below you will find the complete interview with Matthew VanLeeuwen:

TDD: “How did your career begin in the world of beauty?”

MV: “My interest in beauty started at a young age as I was experimenting with makeup in my mother’s bathroom. At the age of twenty-five I was working at Barney’s in New York City on Madison Avenue and got discovered for my talent in doing makeovers by someone’s publicist. Right after that I started doing Drew Barrymore’s makeup for her 1996’s movie ‘’Scream’’ press appearances. That is really how my career kicked off. Right now I work with almost every a-list celebrity, from Jennifer Lopez to the Kardashians”.

TDD: “What has been your most memorable work experience?”

MV: “Every time I do my work. After I am done with my job and my client loves it and feels good about themselves that is to me the best reward from all of this. I want my clients to feel beautiful and confident in their own skin. I think that is the best reward from all of this”.

TDD: “As a highly demanded celebrity makeup artist, are there any celebrities whom you would still like to work with that you haven’t as of yet?”

MV: “Definitely! I would still love to work with Blake Lively. She is a natural beauty and has such a unique look; I would love to do her makeup. I also think Charlize Theron has an amazing sculpted face and strong look. I would do more contouring to define her cheekbones even better”.

TDD: “How would you describe your signature look and what is it about your style that sets you apart from other makeup artists?”

MV: “I like to create a strong eye with a beige lip to raise the energy up. I think the eyes are the first things that connect people. I am also a fan of using highlighters for a glowing and fresh skin”.

TDD: “Is it hard to do someone’s make-up if the person has acne or problematic skin?”

MV: “Everybody has a different type of skin and some are better than others. Of course it is nice to apply makeup to skin with no impurities, but I also do not mind doing someone’s makeup that has a more problematic skin type. It makes it more of a challenge, which is exciting and fun. Especially when the result looks great and the client is happy with it”.

TDD: “What are some of your favorite products and/or make-up brands?”

MV: “I have a lot but some of my favorite brands are Clé de Peau, NYX, Make Up For Ever, Purlisse skincare, and Clarins”.

TDD: “What three items are your favorite from your makeup kit?”

MV: “A beauty blender is a must, Chanel’s intense eye pencil in 69 Clair, NYX HD concealer ‘’glow’’, and Clé de Peau foundation”.

TDD: “Do you use a lot of drugstore products that are more affordable?”

MV: “I do not mind using products arriving from drugstores. I like to use NYX, which can be purchased at Target, but I am honestly a fan of luxury brands. Lots of companies send me their latest products. I think drugstore makeup is getting a lot better over the past few years”.

Mathew6TDD: “Do you have any favorite beauty trends this season?”

MV: “Yes, I think bronzer and a golden highlighter with red lips are absolutely stunning for summer. I also love silky matte lips and glowy skin”.

TDD: “What is the most important beauty advice that you can give to women?”

MV: “Bring attention to the eyes and the higher part of your face. Resist wearing heavy lip colors that drag the face down”.

TDD: “Who are some people that have inspired you throughout your career?”

MV: “There is not really one single person that has inspired me. So many people I have worked with inspire me. I love when I am working amongst my colleagues for events. I learn so much from them”.

TDD: “Do you see yourself coming up with your own product line?”

MV: “I am actually working on two secret projects right now, so stay in tuned!”

TDD: “What is your favorite or most important makeup tip?”

MV: “Curl your eyelashes! It is easy and really opens up your eyes”.

TDD: “Are there any goals you want to accomplish in the future?”

MV: “Expand my platform by doing web series, tutorials, and speaking at schools. I would also love to help people that are in need. For example I would love to help former veterans prepare for job interviews”.

As VanLeeuwen’s last statement indicates, the desire to expand his platform is accomplished by the new SHOWROOM app, which allows for him to share his passion for makeup with other beauty enthusiasts and educate people that are eager to learn. By partnering up with other professional makeup artists and stylists with great expertise in the beauty industry, people at home can now access invaluable insights and explore their own interests in beauty. Not only is the app is convenient, it is also user-friendly for people with no tech experience and benefits everyone who seeks to find the best products out in the market.
