When someone says poncho, I cringe slightly and think of crinkly plastic and rainy days. It’s just hard to take someone seriously that is wearing a blanket with a hole cut out for their head! But as the 70’s trend is coming back, we were pleasantly surprised to see the poncho revamped into a cozy piece that’s layered thoughtfully over a simple pair of jeans.
Burberry brought back the poncho last winter by adding personalized initials on the front, which was seen on many A-list celebrities. Instead of using clashing browns and yellows as one would picture a patchwork poncho, Burberry combined deep maroons and blues with light tan and black for a tribal look.
We also saw bohemian patterned ponchos on Etro, Roberto Cavalli, and Chanel in the past season. Various models were sporting Aztec designs with oversized and elongated silhouettes.
Although these pieces were seen on the winter runways doesn’t mean we are bound to only wearing ponchos half the year. Here are some flouncy ponchos made of lightweight silk, knits, and cashmere. So if you want something stylish and casual for summer or chic and cozy for fall, this trend can transition to any season.
