SPEECH & DEBATE by Stephen Karam

Presented by the Los Angeles New Court Theatre

This December, the Los Angeles New Court Theatre brings Stephen Karam’s contemporary multi-media comedy Speech & Debate to the stage, directed by Nathan Burkart.  In Speech & Debate, three teenage misfits in Salem, Oregon discover they are linked by a sex scandal that’s rocked their town. When one of them sets out to expose the truth, secrets become currency, the stakes get higher, and the trio’s connection grows deeper in this searching, fiercely funny dark comedy with music.  This controversial play covers a range of topics from homosexuality to abortion and most importantly, acceptance.   The Director and founder of LANCT, Nathan Burkart says, “when we take hold of the things that make us different, there is a sense of strength and ability to love yourself for being different… this is where the comedy lies.”

The Los Angeles New Court Theatre is a fully functioning 501(c)(3) that was founded by Nathan, Alex and Megan Burkart in a small Sherman Oaks apartment in 2011.  It is our mission to educate, integrate and create live theatre arts in and for the community of Southern California.  LANCT is proud to showcase artist’s vision and talent through professional quality theatre at an affordable price.

This production features Eddie Vona, Emily A. Fisher (LANCT’s A Piece of My Heart and Fools) Sean Tibangin and Nancy Stone.  Performances of Speech & Debate will be held at the Ruby Theatre in The Complex at 6472 Santa Monica Blvd. in Hollywood. It runs Dec 6-15 with Friday and Saturday performances at 8 PM and Sunday performances at 5 PM.
